10 SIGNS OF PHYSICIAN'S BURNOUT
Burnout, by psychological definition is, "the experience of long-term exhaustion and diminished interest, particularly in one's career". It can happen to anyone and at any time. A physician's burnout is something nobody ever talks about. Is it something less likely to occur? Or perhaps something not worth giving your undivided attention to? It is the necessity of the hour, the talk of the show, the pertaining reason behind today's time, and the only thing we literally don't care about.
Let's list out a few signs that go unnoticed, uncalled for, and truly given no aid whatsoever!
- WELCOME STRESS:
Stress is an unavoidable neighbour and you cannot go without serving it. The simplest way to acknowledge that you are under stress is to accept you are tired, you are sleepy-eyed, or that certain things are kept for tomorrow. Nobody is dying in a day's time, and nobody is asking you, doctors, to take up unnecessary amounts of stress!
- RUN FOR LIVES:
When you run after patients and give no thought to your own health, own diet, own sleep, you are asking for trouble. Yes, it is your supreme most duty to the suffering humanity but at the price of your own well-being?
- SENTIMENTAL DIVORCEMENT:
Detached feeling is the worst form of emotion anyone can ever feel and you feel like it's the end of the world and there's nothing left for you. You start feeling emotionless and when you do, you need to take a step back and appreciate yourself, give time to yourself.
- UNPROMISING FUTURE:
Your ability to look for the wrong symptoms in a sick person can cause you to look for wrong things in everyone, in everything. And, you can only hope that your ability doesn't transform into your inability to hunt for a positive future, a promising and a beautiful one because you too like your patients, deserve one!
- LIFE HIJACKED BY WORK:
Amidst chaotic emergencies, innumerable sheets left empty, classic samples of how to tarnish your biological needs, and the very need to save as many patients as you can, life somewhere takes a steep flip and your life gets hijacked by your work. Don't let that happen to you.
- DEREALIZATION DISORDER:
Closed at the moment, you do not want to open up to anyone, surrounded by walls and you don't want anyone encroaching them. You have also gone emotionally dry at the moment, and you use sarcasm and misanthropy as your safeguards.
- PSYCHOLOGICAL PROJECTION:
Projection is a kind of emitting-emotion process whereby if you feel angry, you note others being angry, if agitated you emit agitation on others and spot the same in them. This can happen when your work-home balance is out of balance.
- COMMITTING BLUNDERS:
Physicians cannot create blunders, they walk tall because they are flawless. Nevertheless, if their mental state is not fine, not at ease, they will inadvertently commit reversible or perhaps irreversible mistakes.
- PROLONGED INEXPLICABLE FATIGUE:
A physician's work-shift can vary from hours to days to weeks and he can go without sleep, without food, and even without mental calmness for long, for prolonging hours, which in turn will play a havoc in his body, and cause inexplicable mental and physical exhaustion.
- WORTHLESS SPIRIT:
There will be days which will not go as promised, as predicted, as wished, but notwithstanding that you have to move on, the show must go on, and you cannot display a dispirited individual. The amount of strain, stress and stretch physicians feel can cause them to feel like a meaningless soul.
